1. Will you make a formal commitment that you will honour the 17th Assembly’s motion to work with the Disabilities Council and other groups to identify gaps and reasoning behind these identified areas of need?
As an MLA, I have always been committed to openness, transparency and consensus building in dealing with issues important to NWT residents. Resources are expected to be limited in the next Assembly which means it will be essential that members set funding targets based on priorities established in consultation with affected parties. I will commit to working with other MLA’s and the NWT Disabilities Council to review the deficiencies in responding to the goals of the 2001 Strategy and to establish priorities for action.
2. Will you formally commit to the development of a new strategic plan and that this plan will be developed over the next 2 years? Do you commit to actively involving identified disability-focused groups toward the goal of significantly increasing the quality of lives for persons living with disability and their families on an immediate, interim and long term basis?
Increasing awareness of the needs of the disabled is an important first step in finding solutions. The GNWT needs to be a leader in addressing these needs, but the support of community governments, business and other residents is critical if long term progress is to be made. If elected, I will work with other MLA’s to examine how the government can partner with other stakeholders to develop a coalition to support future actions on the priorities established in consultation with the Disabilities Council. Where gaps are identified that fall within the Government’s mandate I would support establishing a working group within government to work with the NWT Disabilities Council to set priorities and funding targets to address areas of highest priority.
3. Will you commit to strongly advocating that the 18th Legislative Assembly live up to its commitment to the UN Declaration of Rights for Persons with Disabilities so that people living with disability will experience equal access to; employment, affordable/accessible housing, education, supports and income security?
